After 23 years in Iraq, the U.S. closes its last major military base Wednesday, leaving behind a nation engulfed in armed militants and pushed deeper into peril by America’s open-ended war with Iran.

The Defense Department announced plans to stop hiring civilians for tenured faculty positions at U.S. military service academies. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the change would ensure that academies are focused on their “warfighting mission.”
