Why 🦕 US-China-Geopolitics picked: Trump-Xi Summit Ends With Tea and Tour but Little Visible Policy Progress

The general commentary consensus is “nothing substantial” was achieved. </p> <p>But to me, two things stand out:<br/> 1. Trade truce for two months and then Trump travels to China again in November - Apparently the Chinese were successful in postponing any major negotiations and have successfully pushed the date back to APEC (Nov 18-19) which means Xi would exactly know how much of congress / senate Trump has lost (or preserved). That assessment of the “lame duckiness” of his overall presidency will be the bedrock of negotiations.<br/> 2. China’s red lines were adhered to - Just before the summit there was news that four red lines that China wants Trump to follow (Taiwan, democracy & human rights, right to development and path to development). Trump has cent percent adhered to these, and has shown ZERO off the script running into corny topics like trade imbalance etc. </p> <p>To me, it feels Trump has concluded:<br/> 1. China is a peer, cannot be confronted, and hence has to be accommodated.<br/> 2. China holds far greater leverage, increased manyfold with Iran debacle, and he needs China to help him stop Iran and proxies.<br/> 3. Most importantly, he cannot demand, and hence must request - this alone shows us where the leverage in their relationship lies</p> <p>Simultaneously, Xi appears to be far more comfortable in:<br/> 1. Having managed Trump rather well. No quick wins given just before midterms that could have helped Republicans<br/> 2.
