Democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George has been elected mayor of Washington, D.C., NBC News projects, continuing Democratic control over the capital city — but with a twist, as self-identified socialists make gains in cities across the U.S.

Following Zohran Mamdani's election as New York City mayor, another democratic socialist is set to become mayor of Washington, D.C.

Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor and democratic socialist, was viewed more favorably than Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a fellow high-profile member of the movement.

Democratic socialist Melat Kiros, 29, toppled longstanding incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado's First Congressional District, according to a CBS News projection. CBS News' Anthony Salvanto has more details.

NBC News projects that Kiros, 29, defeated DeGette, who has been in Congress for three decades, in the latest victory for the insurgent left this primary season.

Last week's primary elections likely gave democratic socialists another voice in Congress. Democratic voters in Pennsylvania's Philadelphia-based 3rd Congressional District, the most Democratic district in the nation, nominated Chris Rabb. Rabb joins "The Takeout" to discuss the significance of his victory.

The meeting comes as Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is also trying to build a working relationship with Republican President Donald Trump. The meeting comes just over a week after Mamdani marked his 100th day in office.
